Brush, Floss, Rinse,: 3 daily steps for healthier teeth

How should be our daily teeth cleaning routine:

We all know that a good dental hygiene is important to keep teeth bright and healthy. Although brushing our teeth is very important, flossing and mouth washing should also be part of the routine. As they don’t replace the others.

1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Ideally 3 times, especially after eating. Brushing your teeth will clean the surfaces of your teeth, prevent cavities, and periodontal, or gum disease, which causes at least one-third of adult tooth loss.

2. Floss your teeth at least once a day to clean between your teeth. Flossing helps remove food and dental plaque from teeth. The floss is gently inserted between the teeth and wiped along the teeth sides, especially close to the gums or underneath them.

3. Rinse your mouth with a mouthwash solution at least once a day, ideally before going to bed.

Mouthwash is a liquid which is held in the mouth passively or swilled around the mouth by contraction of the perioral muscles and may be gargled. Usually mouthwashes are an antiseptic solution intended to reduce the microbial load in the oral cavity, although other mouthwashes might be given for other reasons. You should always look for a mouthwash which contains fluoride to help prevent from tooth decay and tooth sensitivity.

Flossing or Mouthwash?

Some people might wonder if mouthwash is better than flossing. The answer to that is no. Floss is the most effective way to get rid of things stuck between your teeth and things that are impossible to reach when brushing or using a mouthwash.

You might experience pain at first if you have never flossed your teeth before but the more you do it the less painful it will become. The reason why it is actually painful is because you have neglected flossing, and remember bleeding while brushing teeth or flossing is not normal. Do not hesitate to brush longer, specially on your gums and floss after each meal if you notice blood when you spit after brushing.

You might also want to have a look at small interdental brushes to clean between your teeth such as Tepe brushes.

Mouthwash aids to eliminate plaques and helps in the prevention of decays and other dental problems but it should not be used to replace flossing.
