Veneers

Dental veneers are designed to cover your existing teeth and give you a brighter, more uniform smile.

They are made of a thin material composed of either resin composite or dental porcelain. Many people in all walks of life, from celebrities to office workers, have veneers fitted because they want a more attractive smile.

At Alkali Dental Studios in Putney, South West London, we are experts at fitting composite veneers. They can have a dramatic effect on the colour, shape, size and even the length of your teeth. For those who want the perfect smile, something like porcelain veneers are often seen as one of the quickest and most affordable solutions to a better smile.

How are dental veneers made?

Veneers can be seen as the equivalent of false nails for your fingers. They are very thin and held to the surface of your existing tooth with a strong bonding agent. Very little preparation is needed – a small amount of enamel may be removed from your natural tooth to make a good surface for bonding. Once the tooth has been prepared and is ready, the dentist will take an impression or mould and a dental technician will then make the veneer, matching the colour on a chart to make sure you achieve a natural look.

Will I need anaesthetic?

You may need a local anaesthetic if the dentist is removing some of the tooth surface but often this is not necessary.

Why should I consider veneers?

Porcelain veneers or composite veneers are a highly effective cosmetic solution to stained, crooked or damaged teeth. They can also be used to correct gaps in your teeth. You won’t see many celebrities on television or in the movies who haven’t had some veneer work done to improve their smiles, Miley Cyrus, Cheryl Cole and Nicholas Cage are among them. They can give you a real Hollywood smile.

How long do veneers last?

Most veneers do not last a lifetime but with sufficient care and regular cleaning composite veneers can last up to 5 years while stronger porcelain veneers can last from 5 to 15 years.

How much do veneers cost?

It depends on the type of veneer you opt for. At Alkali Dental Studios the price can vary between £450 and £850 for each veneer.

Is there an alternative to veneers?

If your tooth needs to be strengthened because it is broken, you have a large filling or have had root canal work, you can go for a crown instead. If you want to close a gap or straighten your teeth you can opt for braces.
